Donna Noble

Donna Noble is the daughter Sylvia and Geoff Noble, and granddaughter of Wilfred Mott. Prior to meeting the Doctor, she held down a series of temporary jobs. She had the opportunity to find permanent work as a secretary for a photocopying business, but she chose instead to take a job as a temp secretary at HC Clements, a security company that was in fact a Torchwood front. It was here that she met her future fiancée, Lance Bennett, who was head of Human Resources at the company.

She burst unexpectedly into the Doctor's life, after he had farewelled his trapped companion Rose, by mysteriously appearing in the TARDIS console room wearing her wedding dress. She had made it halfway down the aisle before a mysterious energy teleported her away. Recovering from the shock of being suddenly transplanted from the ceremony, Donna accused the Doctor of having kidnapped her. She was frightened by the prospect of having transported halfway across the galaxy, and demanded that the Doctor return her. The Doctor discovered that Donna was unwittingly a key figure in a plan by the Empress of the Racnoss to waken her dormant children at the centre of the Earth, and that Lance was working for the Empress. When she realised this, Donna was heartbroken. A trip back in time to see the creation of the Earth opened her eyes to the enormity of the universe. Donna helped the Doctor defeat the Racnoss, though she was terrified by his callousness. She turned down his offer to join him on his travels, but suggested that he should find someone as he needed to be told when to stop. She decided that she would go out and do something meaningful with her life.

Almost immediately after she bid the Doctor farewell, she regretted it. It wasn't easy to change her life overnight, especially when she still had her own life to lead. Meanwhile, her father's health deteriorated and he passed away. She started investigating strange phenomena in the hope of meeting the Doctor again. She would get her chance while investigating sinister goings-on at Adipose Industries. The Doctor was also investigating Adipose and the two eventually joined forces. After helping the Doctor save the day again, Donna set off with the Doctor to journey into time and space...

For Donna's first trip in the TARDIS as his companion, the Doctor attempted to take Donna to ancient Rome, though the pair ended up in Pompeii as "Volcano Day" approached. The Doctor tried to leave, abandoning Pompeii to its fate, though the TARDIS had vanished. Donna challenged why the Doctor couldn't save Pompeii, and he explained that the events were fixed in history. Donna was unwilling to accept this explanation, until the two realised that Vesuvius failing to erupt would lead to the Earth being overrun by the rock-like Pyrovillians. Donna took responsibility, along with the Doctor, for triggering the eruption, being forced to sacrifice the town for the sake of the entire world. Nevertheless, Donna was able to convince the Doctor to save one family trapped in their home. The Doctor and Donna next visited the Ood-sphere, the home of the servile Ood. Donna's moral outrage was piqued when she realised that the Ood were not servants, but slaves. Donna and the Doctor played a major role in the revolution on the Ood-sphere. They discovered that the Ood had a secondary brain that telepathically linked to the hive brain, though Ood Operations removed this and replaced it with the synthetic translator ball.

Donna has met and worked with Martha Jones, the Doctor's previous companion, to investigate the mysterious ATMOS devices which had been linked to a series of deaths. Martha, as UNIT's medical officer, had called the Doctor, and thus also Donna, to assist the investigation. The Doctor told Donna about Martha in "Partners in Crime." Donna and Martha work well together and have become friends. When Martha advised that Donna not keep her new life secret from her family, she visited her mother and grandfather, confiding in Wilf about her adventures. However, she quickly went back with the Doctor when the crisis escalated as the Sontarans used the devices to poison the planet. Donna was trapped in the TARDIS when it was teleported on board the Sontaran ship. Despite her terror, she braved the might of the Sontaran army to sneak through the ship and restore the teleport, bringing her safely back to Earth. Donna's fury at the Doctor for attempting to sacrifice himself to stop the Sontarans contrasted strongly with Martha's relief in his return to safety, demonstrating Donna's strident personality.

Donna is one of the few people who can prickle at the Doctor's conscience. It was Donna's tough support that helped the Doctor recognise the genetic anomoly Jenny as his daughter. Donna's skills with numbers helped uncover the secrets of a generations-old war in the bowels of the planet Messaline.

Donna received her TARDIS key in "The Poison Sky" and a cell phone upgrade in "The Doctor's Daughter," both have which are considered accouterments of being a companion to the Doctor.
